Recycling, waste guides go out to public

There were 14,406 tons of residential waste materials recycled in Council Bluffs last year, nearly as much as the amount dumped in the landfill the city uses.
Not only does recycling help the environment and reduce landfill usage, but also jobs are created. There are 123 jobs in Iowa for every ton of material that is recycled, and for every 100 jobs created, 72 additional jobs are sustained in the Iowa economy.
These tidbits of information are found in the latest Council Bluffs Recycling and Solid Waste Services Guide, which is being mailed to every residence this year, said Public Health Director Donn Dierks.
The 31-page booklet provides all the necessary information on trash and recycling collection, plus phone numbers for those to call with questions, he said.
“I keep mine next to my phone book,” Dierks said.
The cut-off back cover features the curbside recycling collection schedule for April 2010 through March 2011 and is color-coded to show when the Green Weeks occur, as well as the Blue Weeks.
Green Weeks are when plastic and metal recyclables will be picked up, while paper, cardboard and glass recyclables are collected on Blue Weeks.
“You can cut off the back page and put it on the refrigerator to keep the recycling weeks straight,” Dierks said.
The booklet’s first section deals with refuse and recycling services, including the acceptable and unacceptable placement of waste, plus information on bag limits and how to get extra garbage stickers.
The second and third sections discuss the services available at the Council Bluffs Recycling Center and the Regional Collection Center for Household Hazardous Waste. Another page contains information on pet license deadlines and how to deal with animal waste.
There’s also a section featuring informative photos on how to wash vehicles in an environmentally friendly fashion.
“It’s to help the public do things right,” Dierks said.
