Omaha to test recycling effort- Green cans now dot downtown and cost taxpayers nothing

Downtown Omaha is going green for spring. Mayor Jim Suttle was at 11th and Farnam Streets Monday afternoon to unveil the first two of 50 recycling and trash bins that are being placed around downtown.

Recycling, waste guides go out to public

There were 14,406 tons of residential waste materials recycled in Council Bluffs last year, nearly as much as the amount dumped in the landfill the city uses. Not only does recycling help the environment and reduce landfill usage, but also jobs are created. There are 123 jobs in Iowa for every ton of material that is recycled, and for every 100 jobs created, 72 additional jobs are sustained in the Iowa economy.
