Asking people to pay to have their plastic bottles, tin cans and wastepaper picked up would seem to be a nonstarter in Omaha, where the city collects recyclables at no charge, along with garbage and yard waste.
Recycling is important, according to Shannon Meister, and it’s important that more and more people know about it. That’s her job. Meister is the educational coordinator for the Council Bluffs Recycle Center, 4441 Gifford Road, and has helped create more awareness of the facility and the need for recycling.
“Going green” has gone beyond recycling cans and eating organic food. Americans are embracing the environmental and cost benefits of repurposing old items they might once have thrown away.
